Part 2: During and After Mixing:

  • Now, watch the video where our three substances are mixed together! Record your observations in the table above.

I'll put the video later, watch me and follow the directions.

Key Concept:

When you mix substances, you sometimes end up with a mixture that has different properties.

3

Based on this, we can say a chemical reaction did occur during the Mixing Substances Investigation. Because a reaction occurred, we will call it the Hot Yellow Gas Reaction. We know it is a reaction because there was a color change, a temperature change, and gas was produced. We can call it the HYG Reaction for short.

Did a Chemical Reaction Happen?

Warm Up

Mayor McKnight has written to us with a new idea for how to help the people of East Ferris. Read and answer the questions below.

1.

Based on the definition, which of the following could be described as wastewater? Select all that apply (there may be more than one correct answer).

Let’s look at the diagram of how a wastewater treatment plant works.

6.

Does the wastewater have the same properties before and after being treated (after substances were added)?

Observing Substances

To help us figure out how new substances form, let’s do an investigation. We will observe substances before and then mix them together to see what happens.

Directions:

Part 1: Before Mixing:

  • Observe the baking soda, calcium chloride, and phenol red solution BEFORE mixing using the pictures below. [color, shape, size, smell, state of matter (solid, liquid, gas)] Write your observations in the table below.

10.

What happened while the baking soda, calcium chloride, and phenol red solution were mixing?

11.

What properties did you observe after the substances mixed?

12.

Are they the properties the same or different as the properties before they mixed?

You should have have read the book Chemical Reactions Everywhere for last week's TES 5.2 assignment. Let's review chemical reactions.
