MONDAY

There were no banks in early Indiana, but people still needed to purchase items from each other.  People often traded items or services to get the things they needed.  Indians uses "wampum" made of shells or stones as money.  Gold and silver were also used to buy things.

Indiana's first schools for blacks were opened in 1869.  Most schools in the state were segregated by race for many years.  That meant that black children and white children couldn't go to the same schools.  Indiana passes a law in 1949 that made segregation illegal in public schools.

Astonaunt Frank Borman is one of the first humans to have orbited the moon!  Frank was born in 1928 in Gary.  He became an Air Force fighter pilot and then a NASA astonaut.  He commanded the 1968 Apollo * mission during which he orbited the moon.
