Birds and Their Nests
Different kinds of birds build different kinds of nests. Some birds, like a finch, build nests in trees. Other birds, like an eagle, will build a nest on the ground if there isn't a tree nearby.
Some birds take longer than others to build their homes. A finch takes 12 days to make its nest. Eagles may take two months to build their nests.
A finch and eagle use grass, twigs, and mud to build their nests. The mud holds the grass and twigs together. They add more grass to the inside of their nests to make it softer.
Birds lay eggs in nests. A finch can lay up to 8 eggs. An eagle can lay up to 3 eggs. Both birds sit on their eggs to keep them warm. Birds hide their nests to keep the eggs safe, so hungry animal cannot find the eggs or nests.
