The author's purpose in this passage is to entertain: James really wanted to make grilled cheese, so he went downstairs to the kitchen. First, he got out the frying pan, bread, cheese and butter. He put on an apron and got started. Then, he opened the bread and took out two pieces. Next, he put 3 cheese slices on the bread and put the sandwich together. He turned the stove on and let his pan warm up. While he was waiting, he spread butter on both sides of the bread, before putting it into the pan to cook.
