Then, he rubs the balloon against his head for one minute and then holds the balloon fifteen centimeters from his head, looks in a mirror, and records his observations.

Part 3- Magnets and Problem Solving CER

One of the heavy bolts that holds the door on your locker fell off. The bolt landed in a crack between the lockers that cannot be reached by hand. The custodian suggested attaching a magnet to a meter stick and using that to retrieve the bolt. He can go to the store to buy a magnet, but has a small budget. He has asked you to decide which of three magnets he should purchase and use to get the bolt:
  • Magnet A would cost $5
  • Magnet B would cost $10
  • Magnet C would cost $15.
The bolt weighs 18 grams. In order to decide which magnet to use, you conduct some experiments to determine how many nails each magnet can lift. Each nail weighs 1 gram. The data table from your experiment is shown below.
