COMPOSING USING PRIMARY CHORDS
Primary chords are a great starting point for composing a song or instrumental piece. Try the following step by step guide to get you started:
  1. The key has already been determined for you. The first and last chords have been written for you.
  2. Place the iv64 and V65 chords in whatever order you want in the remaining measures of the bass clef (don't forget to raise the LT!). Use whole notes or half notes for the chords and write the Roman numeral & fig bass below the staff.
  3. Now try composing a melody in the treble clef. Start with a whole note in each measure- make sure the note you add is in the chord that you have placed in the bass clef! Once you have a note in every measure you can go back and add quarter notes and half notes to make yourmelody more interesting.
  4. The notes on beats 1 and 3 should be chord tones (notes that are inthe chord you wrote in the bass clef). The notes on bea ts 2 and 4 can be non chord tones if you wish. (Passing tones or neighbor tones- explanation below)
  5. Your melody should include more than just one whole note in each measure.
  6. When you are finished, go to the piano and play your composition. How does it sound? Make any last changes before you submit!
