ER 2.3: How Plants Make Food
Leaves and Roots Game
Debriefing the Model
Independent Practice - Photosynthesis
We discussed chemical reactions in our last unit. When producers take water and carbon dioxide to make food using energy from sunlight, they are turning substances into a new substance. This means this is a chemical reaction that occurs in the producers!

We call this chemical reaction photosynthesis!

The chemical reaction of photosynthesis also produces oxygen which helps us humans stay alive!

Question 1
1.

Check For Understanding:
What 2 parts of the plant take in the things they need to make food?

Question 2
2.

Check For Understanding:
Explain how plants make food.

Criteria For Success
  1. Identify the 3 things plants need for food AND what part of the plant they enter.
  2. Explain how plants use these 3 ingredients to get food matter.

Question 3
3.

Check For Understanding:
What do plants use food matter for?

Leaves and Roots Game Directions

Setup
  1. Place the set of cards in the center of the table.
  2. Divide your group of four into two pairs. Pairs will play against each other.
  3. Each pair should have one game board.
  4. Each pair should take the following items from the tray and place themon their game boards: - 2 pieces of brown pipe cleaner to represent roots - 2 pieces of green pipe cleaner to represent leaves - 1 white cube to represent carbon dioxide (in the air) - 1 blue cube to represent water - 1 yellow token to represent sunlight (energy)
  5. The team with the youngest player starts first.
What to Do When It’s Your Turn
  1. For each leaf you have, take 1 carbon dioxide and 1 sunlight. Place them on your game board.
  2. Turn over a card and follow the instructions.
  3. Decide whether you want to add leaves and/or roots to your plant to make it grow. You can only add 1 leaf or 1 root per turn.
  • If you choose to make your plant grow:
  • Exchange 1 food molecule for 1 root or 2 food molecules for 1 leaf.
  • Put the sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide that you’ve used back into their cups.
  • Take the leaves and/or roots and place them on the plant on your game board.
  • If you choose not to make your plant grow, your turn is over.
Winning
The first pair to grow 5 roots and 5 leaves on their plant wins!

Question 10
10.

Where do food molecules for cecropia trees come from?

Criteria For Success
  1. Identify 3 things plants use for food molecules AND what part of the plant they enter
  2. Explain how plants use these 3 things to make food molecules
