ER 2.4: Claims and Evidence About Energy
We discussed chemical reactions in our last unit. When producers take water and carbon dioxide to make food using energy from sunlight, they are turning substances into a new substance. This means this is a chemical reaction that occurs in the producers!

We call this chemical reaction photosynthesis!

The chemical reaction of photosynthesis also produces oxygen which helps us humans stay alive!
2

Photosynthesis: Starting Substances
What Matter do you start with? Select all that apply.

2

Photosynthesis: End/Product Substances
What Matter do you end up with? Select all that apply.

5

Fill in each blank in this photosynthesis diagram showing how producers make food

Draggable itemCorresponding Item
E
Leaves absorb sunlight
B
Plant releases oxygen into the atmosphere
D
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf
C
Photosynthesis begins glucose (sugar) is made
A
Roots absorb water/nutrients
Food Chain and Food Web
Use the food chain model to answer the following questions:

Fill out the boxes to create a food chain from the food web above:
___________ →________________ →___________ →_________
Other Answer Choices:
cactus
grasshopper
hawk
lizard
1

Name all of the original sources of food molecules in the food web above.

How does a tarantula get the molecules that it needs for energy and to build its body?

The tarantula gets its food molecules from __________

Revising a Key Concept About Food Molecules
You have been investigating where plants get their food molecules. We’ve learned they make them by using water, energy from sunlight, and carbon dioxide from the air.

Back in lesson ER 1.5, we gathered evidence about animals needing energy for movement and growth.

Check For Understanding
Animals use some food molecules to release energy for movement and growth.

Is this also true for plants?

Ecosystem Restoration Simulation:
  • Open the simulation
  • What does it look like when energy is released?
  • Find evidence to see if plants also use some food molecules for movement and growth.

Check For Understanding
Based on what you observed, is there evidence to support the claim that plants use some food molecules for energy or not? What evidence did you see?

Gathering Evidence About Energy - Independent Practice
We know that the food molecules in an ecosystem come from plants.

Where does energy in an ecosystem come from?
  • Open the simulation.
  • Then, press play and observe where energy comes from for each organism.
  • HINT: It will be easier to trace the energy by turning energy on and matter off.
  • Then, answer the questions below.
4
For each organism below, write where you think it gets its energy. Drag the correct word into the box.

The wolf gets energy from ___________
The rabbit gets energy from __________
The plant gets energy from ________
The mushroom gets energy from __________________
Other Answer Choices:
plant
rabbit
sun
dead organism
Making Arguments About Energy
Where does energy in an ecosystem come from? We’ll investigate TWO possible claims and look for evidence in the Simulation.

Where does energy in an ecosystem come from?

Claim 1: All energy in an ecosystem is made by plants.
Claim 2: Energy in an ecosystem can always be traced back to the sun.
  • Open the simulation.

What evidence did we see in the sim to support Claim 1: All energy is an ecosystem is made by plants.

0

What evidence did we see in the sim to support Claim 2: Energy is an ecosystem can always be traced back to the sun.

Check For Understanding
Which claim do you think is best supported by the evidence from the simulation, Claim 1 or Claim 2?

Criteria For Success:
  1. Identify where energy in an ecosystem comes from.
  2. Use evidence from the sim to support your answer.
  3. Explain how the wolves, rabbits, and mushrooms get energy.

Trace the path that energy flows in the ecosystem. Where did it start and where did it go?

Energy in an ecosystem comes from _______.
In the sim, it shows _______.
Rabbits get energy by _______.
Wolves get energy by _______. Mushrooms get energy by _______.
