Check For Understanding

The picture to the left shows a puppy growing up over time.

Based on our reading yesterday, explain how the puppy grew using the words matter and molecules.

1

The dog’s owner compared the dog’s size to a bottle of sriracha hot sauce. What is true of both the dog and the bottle of hot sauce?

Introduction to Argumentation - What do alligators eat?

An __________ is the use of evidence to say why one scientific idea is best. When scientists make arguments, they make a claim and support it with evidence.

A __________ is a proposed answer to a question.

__________ is information that supports an answer to a question.
1

Based on the evidence, what do alligators eat?

Observing Animals in their Environment

Evidence About How Animals Grow
Read page 10 and answer the question to the right.

The new matter needed for growth comes from what an animal eats. Food is also made of matter. When an animal eats food, it is eating billions and billions of atoms and molecules. These atoms and molecules are all matter that the animal uses to grow. Inside the animal's body, the food molecules are broken down and used to build new molecules that make up bone, blood, muscle, skin, and other body parts.

What are some scientific ideas or evidence you gathered from reading on page 10 about how animals grow?

Read page 11 and answer the question to the right.

Not all the matter that an animal eats gets added to the animal's body. Some of the matter isn't used by the animal. This matter ends up as different kinds of waste, including droppings. More important, the animal uses some of the food matter to get energy. (Animals need energy to move and do all of the things animals do.) When an animal uses matter to get energy, that matter is changed and released as gases into the air.

What are two other ways animals use food molecules?

Check For Understanding

Based on your reading and what you observed in the Otter video, what claim can you make about how animals grow?

Criteria For Success:
  • Identify where animals get their molecules to grow.
  • Explain what they do with this molecules and how they use these molecules to grow.

Modeling How Animals Grow
You will make models of animals growing by using cubes representing food molecules and body molecules.

DIRECTIONS: Modeling How Animals Grow
  1. You will make a model to show how animals grow.
  2. Use a stack of seven blue cubes to represent the otter and a stack of three blue cubes to represent the fish.
  3. Describe to your partner what is happening in your model.
  4. Draw your revised model on your worksheet

Why do you think the otter and fish are made out of the same thing in this model?

0

Why does the otter have more cubes than the fish?

0

Using this model, you will show how animals grow. What would the otter need to do so it can grow?

Question: How do animals grow?

Criteria For Success:
  • Identify where animals get their molecules to grow.
  • Explain what they do with these molecules and how they use these molecules to grow.
