WP 3.1 Investigating Wind

Objective: KWBAT investigate the effects of air pressure on wind and rainfall.

Part 1: Warm Up

Directions: Read through the email from Dr. Emerson, then answer the questions below.
0

What is wind?

0

How do you think wind could be related to severe rainstorms?

0

What are the three factors that cause more severe rain (that we’ve learned so far)?

Part 2: Exploring Wind and Pressure

ARTICLE EXCERPT:

Wind is formed when air moves from an area of high pressure to low pressure.

Air molecules have weight and can apply pressure on different surfaces. Pressure relates to how much something pushes on something else.

In our atmosphere, the air pressure is caused by the weight of all of the air molecules pushing against the surface of Earth. In some areas the air pressure is high, and in some areas the air pressure is low.

Imagine a pile of books stacked one on top of the other.

The weight or pressure on the bottom book would be much greater than the pressure on the top one.

It’s the same with air molecules; in some areas, air molecules have greater pressure on them than others.

Finish the quote: In our atmosphere, the air pressure is caused by....

1

True or false: Air pressure is felt the same in all areas of the world.

0

Evaluate: A hiker decided to go on a hike at Big Bear. Where did the hiker experience the highest (THE MOST) air pressure: at the start of their hike (6752 ft above sea level) or at the end of their hike (6880 ft above sea level)?

0

Explain: Why did you select that answer choice?

Part 3: Modeling Wind and Air Parcels

In the next sections, we will look at the relationship between air pressure and wind.
1

What does each object in the video represent?

  • Air Parcel
  • Wind
  • A Region
  • Balloon
  • 3 Fans
  • Space between fans
0

How can an air parcel move upward?

0

Wind moves toward a certain region because that region is an area of low pressure that is surrounded by an area of higher pressure. In the video, we first saw wind from one fan, which represented just one area of high and low pressure causing the wind.

Predict: What do you think causes wind to come in from different directions on Earth towards one single area?

Part 4: What Causes Wind Article?

Scientists always collect data from articles or present their findings in the form of articles.

We will now read a short article about what causes wind. This will help us understand the purpose of areas of pressure and how they are studied.
1
The main cause of wind is differences in __________ between __________ areas.
1

When gasses warm up, their molecules move faster, spread out and fall.

1
In areas of high pressure, the gasses in the air are more _______ . In areas of low pressure, the gases are more _______ .
1
Gases move from ________________________ to _______________________ .
Other Answer Choices:
low-pressure areas
high-pressure areas
1

When things in nature try to even out, it is called...

Part 5: Air Parcels in the Sim

Goal: Try to make wind!

Part 1: Creating Wind in the Simulation

  1. Launch the Weather Patterns Sim.
  2. Select Regional Weather 2 mode.
  3. Use the new tools to make wind.
  4. Answer the question below.
Hint: You do not need to worry about the surface water or sunlight level.

You do not need to click on RUN. Just leave it on BUILD.
0

To make wind in the sim, you have to make some changes to the conditions that are given to you.

What changes did you make in the sim to create wind?

Sentence starter:
To make wind, I...

3

Categorize the image with the correct response.

  • Highest level of pressure
  • Second highest level of pressure
  • Lowest level of pressure
1

How do you make A LOT of wind go into the air parcel?

Low pressure at parcel (level 1) and....

1

How do you make A LITTLE BIT of wind go into the air parcel?

Low pressure at parcel (level 1) and....

0

OPTIONAL:

What slide is the symbol on?

Finished early?
