Jonas has no concept of grandparents. Why not?

"The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not take his pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away"-Chapter 16.
Jonas decides to do this after he shares with Gabriel the idea of family, love, good feelings and memories that seem to be missing in The Community.
