If you revise an assignment late, make sure to email Ms. Jernberg to let her know.

Based on the information above, if I revise a late assignment, what do I need to do afterwards in order to make sure it is graded?

The two main ways we learn or grow are by getting feedback from others and researching how other people have solved our problem (what did other people do in my situation?).

1

What are the two ways we learn according to the text above?

1

Besides earning a higher grade, why do I need to go back and revise last week's assignment?

PART 2

TUESDAY April 27th 2021

Questions 7-16

Due Tuesday the 27th at 11:55pm

Situation: the alderman of your neighborhood just mandated that everyone in your neighborhood MUST return to school.

Role: You need to email your alderman (the boss of your neighborhood) telling him/her your opinion about this new law (argument essay).

1

What position will you take in your fake email to your adlerman?

Three ways to make your argument stronger are to

1.) show research that proves your argument is correct

2.) find a credible source (doctor, analyst, researcher, expert, someone with experience) who also agrees with you.

3.) Find a counterargument (argument that goes against your argument) and explain why that argument is wrong or weak.

1

Based on the information above, what are two ways to make your argument stronger?

For questions 9-14 you will find two possible quotes to use in your letter to your alderman. Remember, you want to choose quotes that either show research or examples that support your side of the argument OR an expert or person with experience that agrees with your side of the argument when choosing quotes.

Helpful Hint: You can highlight the quote directly in the article and copy and paste it for your answer!
Articles that support the argument: Students should return to school

  • "As medical doctors, we believe reopening Chicago's schools is safe and essential", written by 17 Chicago doctors (We read and analyzed this article)

  • "Learning setbacks a top concern for parents: poll" By Collin Binkley and Hannah Fingerhut

  • "Students are falling behind in online school. Where's the COVID-19 'disaster plan' to catch them up?" by Erin Richards
Articles that support the argument: All students should not return to school

  • "Children now playing 'huge role' in spread of COVID-19 variant, expert says" by Dr. Michael Osterholm (We read and analyzed this article)

  • "1 in 3 CPS students back in classrooms are being taught by remote teachers" by principals association

  • "I chose to go back to school on a hybrid schedule. My first day back was miserable", by Henry Smith

Quote #1

Possible quote for my argument paragraph (letter to alderman). Choose an article above and find a quote that you could use in your argument paragraph (letter to alderman). Remember, choose a quote that either shows research or examples that support your side of the argument OR an expert or person with experience that agrees with your side of the argument.

REQUIREMENTS
1.) No longer than 2 sentences! Should be short!
2.) Put quotation marks around your quote after you copy and paste it
3.) Make SURE your quote is either research or an example that supports your side of the argument OR is a quote from an expert or person with experience that agrees with your side of the argument.

1

What article did you choose for your first possible quote?

1

How will your first quote support your side of the argument when you write your argument paragraph (letter to alderman). In other words, why did you choose your first quote?

1

Quote #2

Possible quote for my argument paragraph (letter to alderman). Choose an article above and find a quote that you could use in your argument paragraph (letter to alderman). Remember, choose a quote that either shows research or examples that support your side of the argument OR an expert or person with experience that agrees with your side of the argument.

NOTE: You may choose the same article as your first quote if you want to, but you must choose a different quote.

1

What article did you choose for your second possible quote? Again, it is okay to choose the same article as your first quote for your second quote.

1

How will your second quote support your side of the argument when you write your argument paragraph (letter to alderman). In other words, why did you choose your first quote?

1

Counterargument!

Now let's find a quote that goes against our argument! Choose an article that doesn't support your main opinion. Then, find a quote that either presents research, examples, or an expert opinion that goes against your argument.

REQUIREMENTS
1.) No longer than 2 sentences! Should be short!
2.) Put quotation marks around your quote after you copy and paste it
3.) Make sure your quote GOES AGAINST the argument you are trying to argue.

1

Rebuttal!

Now you need to explain why the counterarguent (argument that goes against your argument) is either wrong or weak. The more reasons you can think to disprove or weaken the opposite argument, the stronger your argument becomes! See the example:

My Argument: All students should not return to school immediately

Counter Argumet: The New York Times article “Students who Return to School Performed Higher on Tests than Remote Students” argues, as its title points out, that students who returned to in-person learning “performed better on standardized tests than those students who continued remote learning.” The main argument being made is that students are learning more if they are in school rather than taking online classes.

Rebuttal: The main problem with this argument is that most states did not enforce students to take standardized tests during the pandemic, so the main students who are taking the test are the ones who are in school. Also, for those students who did take the standardized test online realized that test taking at home is not ideal. Finally, many colleges don’t ask for standardized test scores anymore since standardized tests don’t necessarily show learning. Consider how students have been able to become much better writers during this pandemic as teachers have had more time to grade and give feedback to their students remotely.

DIRECTIONS: Write your reubuttal to the counterargument you wrote in question 17 below. For guidance, see tips and example above.

Sample Argument Essay/ Letter to Alderman
Let's look at the different components of the thesis and first paragraph of this letter/essay
1

What should our thesis statement inclue?

1

What should our topic sentence include?

1

When writing your quote, what do you need to "make sure you" do?

Choose the three options presented in the image above.

1

After you write your quote, what should you do according to the image above?

1

The example paragraph includes imagery. How can imagery help a person's argument according to the image above?

1

What specific details did Justin Thyme, the student who wrote the above argument paragraph, include to create his imagery for his alderman?

Note, the wrong answers are actually better examples of imagery! You can do better than Justin in your paragraph!

There are three total (two visual and one auditory)

1

The above image explains that using reptition, strong and striking statements, metaphors, similes, and all other types of literary and rhetorical devices are a great way to create strong and influencing language.

What literary devices besides imagery did Justin Thyme use? See image above for help. Note: you need to choose two answers below.

1

How should you end or conclude your paragraph?

5

Ok, let's work on some imagery that you could use in our argument paragraph. Remember, imagery is describing any one of the five senses (see, smell, taste, touch, and sound).

Consider your argument (are your for all students returning or against it?). Then, create a situation in your mind that helps support your opinion for your reader:

  • If you are against returning, consider negative sounds, sights, smells associated with in-person learning during covid OR consider positive sounds, sights, smells of at home learning.
  • If you are for students returning to school, consider negtative sounds, sights, smells of remote learning and/or positive sights, smells, sounds of school.
Requirements
-Must contain at least two difference senses (smell, sound, sight, touch, taste)
-Must be at least three sentences= Three periods!
-Capitalize proper nouns
-Capitalize the first word of each sentence.

Worth 5 points If stuck, see the example paragraph (you can write better imagery than Justin; I know it!)

1

Now let's make a simile or metaphor to relate the situation we wrote in the question above to.

Consider the scene you just wrote when using imagery in the question above. What could we relate that scene to in order to create a simile or a metaphor?

In the example paragraph, Justin Thyme compared the situation or scene he created with his imagery to being like a dog. Perhaps you can think of an animal, a group of animals, or a natural disaster, or maybe a different situation in nature like rain or sunny day to compare the situation your wrote with your imagery to. If stuck, see the example paragraph.

Write your simile or metaphor below:

1

Notice the wonderful use of transition words and phrases argument paragraph. What are some transition words used in this paragraph? NOTE: You can use way more and sound way smarter than Justin Thyme!

Note: There are two transition words used in the image/example paragraph above. Choose BOTH transition words found in the example paragraph for credit.

Now let's look at the second paragraph of our essay. GOOD NEWS: YOu have most of this paragraph ALREADY WRITTEN!
1

How should you begin EVERY paragraph? If you aren't sure, see the image above for the answer

1

In your second paragraph, what should your quote be about?

1

After your quote in your second paragraph you need to include

1

How should you end EVERY paragraph?
