7.1 Lesson 7 Check Your Progress: Skater Test Track

Please answer the questions below about energy transformations in the PhET Energy Skatepark simulation we used this week.

Take your time and explain your answers - this Check Your Progress assessment can be counted as a quiz grade.

Where is potential energy greatest in a system?

Where is potential energy the least in a system?

Where is kinetic energy greatest in a system?

Where is kinetic energy the least in a system?

There is a problem with this track. When I start the skater at point A (the shorter of the two sides) and run the simulation, the skater isn’t able to make it to point D, (the taller of the two sides), even though there is NO FRICTION.

Explain why the skater isn't able to make it to point D. Be sure to use the names of locations that match the diagram. You can add your own letters/locations if you need to. Also remember to use these words and ideas we’ve talked about in class - potential energy, kinetic energy, conservation of energy.

You can watch the simulation below if it will help you to see what's happening. You will want to start it at the 0:30 mark, and you will only need to watch about 30 seconds or so.
