Are Johnny and Ponyboy heroes?

Pros
They ran into a burning building to save kids they didn't even know.
They stayed in the building looking for each and every kid, even as the building was falling in on them.
Cons
They probably started the fire and it was their fault.
Johnny said he wanted to die anyway, maybe this was just his way of trying to kill himself.
