Virgil "Gus" Grissom served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force before he became one of the first seven U.S. astronauts in 1959. In 1967, while he ws training to land on the moon, Gus was killed when a fire swept through the command module of his spacecraft. Gus was born in 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana.
