The Indiana state flag was adopted in 1917.  It always flies above the state capitol.  The flag features a golden torch and flame with golden stars.

Indiana is 140 miles east to weat...or west to east.  Indiana is 270 miles north to south...or south to north!  Either way, it's a long drive.

Many of Indiana's early Indian tribes came to the area from the eastern part of the counry.  They were escaping wars between tribes.  Most tribes only stayed in Indiana for 25 to 50 years before they moved further west.  Indian tribes in the state included the Miami, Delaware, Kickapoo, and Shawnee.

Virgil "Gus" Grissom served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force before he became one of the first seven U.S. astronauts in 1959.  In 1967, while he ws training to land on the moon, Gus was killed when a fire swept through the command module of his spacecraft.  Gus was born in 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana.
