One legend says that when indiana settlers answered a knock on the cabin door they said, "Who's yere?," which later turned into "Hoosier." Today "Hoosier" is used to refer to people from Indiana. Another nickname for Indiana is "Heartland of America."

Many Hoosiers were against slavery. Wayne County was known as Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad. Members of the Underground Railroad were people who secretly helped slaves escape to freedom. Not everyone in Indiana agreed with helping slaves escape. Indiana passed a law in 1850 that made it illegal to help escaped slaves.
