Objective: SWBAT gather evidence and draw conclusions about how the earth moves.
Hello astronomers! We are going to look for even more evidence that will support our idea that the daily pattern of when we see the sun and other stars is caused by Earth spinning.
These pictures show the sun “setting.” However, we know that the sun and other stars don’t really move.
What do you see in the largest image?
What do you see in the smaller images?
Explain what is actually happening when it looks like the sun is setting.
We’ve done some great investigating into finding evidence that the Earth spins. Now, we’re going to use a digital model to show our ideas about why we see the sun and stars in a repeating pattern.
Go to the amplify app Model 2.3 Sun and Other Stars: https://apps.learning.amplify.com/modelingtool/#/tool/124/level/23_Sun_and_Other_Stars_id_2880

Follow the directions:
Click on the Earth. A pink dot appears. This is how you spin/rotate the Earth.
In the bottom of the Sim, you see two green observers. One can see the sun, one can see the stars. To rotate them, click on the person and move the pink dot.
Complete the missions and questions below.
Mission 1: Place the daytime observer (Bob) on Earth in Time 1(on the left) so he is standing in North America and sees the Sun.
Mission 2: Place the nighttime observer (Bob) in Time 2 (on the right) so he is standing in North America and sees the stars.
How long does it take for the Earth to spin all the way around to the same spot?
The next time the person would see Orion is… Select all that apply

Looking at Time 2, when is the next time the person (Bob) would see Orion (the stars)? Select all that apply

What causes the daily pattern of when we see the sun and other stars?
