Chapter Question: Why is the sun up sometimes, but not other times?

Warm Up - Spinning Earth

Hello astronomers! We are going to look for even more evidence that will support our idea that the daily pattern of when we see the sun and other stars is caused by Earth spinning.

These pictures show the sun “setting.” However, we know that the sun and other stars don’t really move. Explain what is actually happening when it looks like the sun is setting.

The sun looks like it’s going down during a sunset because....

This video shows photographs taken from space that have been put together into a video. As you watch the video, pick a landmass, like Africa, to watch for to prove that the Earth is spinning.

Modeling Our Ideas

We’ve done some great investigating into finding evidence that the Earth spins. Now, we’re going to use a digital model to show our ideas about why we see the sun and stars in a repeating pattern.

Go to the amplify app Model 2.3 Sun and Other Stars: https://apps.learning.amplify.com/modelingtool/#/tool/124/level/23_Sun_and_Other_Stars_id_2880

Follow the directions:

  • Click on the Earth. A pink dot appears. This is how you spin/rotate the Earth.

  • In the bottom of the Sim, you see two green observers. One can see the sun, one can see the stars. To rotate them, click on the person and move the pink dot.

  • Complete the missions and questions below.

Mission 1: Place the daytime observer (Bob) on Earth in Time 1(on the left) so he is standing in North America and sees the Sun.

Mission 2: Place the nighttime observer (Bob) in Time 2 (on the right) so he is standing in North America and sees the stars.
