Jill's First Day
It was Jill’s first day at Morgan Middle School. Most of the students had been nice to her, until she got into gym class. The coach had assigned two captains, Kelly and Sara, and they were picking teams from the girls in Jill’s class. As the two girls chose their teams, it became pretty clear to Jill who was popular and who was not. Since Jill was short for her age, everyone just assumed that Jill could not play volleyball. As the choices dwindled, Jill still remained in the pool of struggling athletes that hadn’t been chosen yet. Now there were only two girls left: Kelly and Sara joked about who was going to get stuck with whom, and then Kelly made her last pick. It was not Jill . She sighed and reluctantly joined the other team. As soon as the game began, Kelly became aware of the error that she had made. Jill quickly jumped up at the net and tipped the ball over. With each play, it soon became clear that Jill was an excellent volleyball player. What she lacked in height, Jill made up for in her ability to jump, and she continued to do well the whole game. That was the only time that Jill would be the last pick at that school.
