Background Information:

Orthography (spelling) is one of the biggest challenges for Heritage Speakers of any language.
While Spanish is much easier to spell than English, there are certain aspects of the language that are difficult to spell not just for Heritage Speakers, but for all speakers of the language.
Question 1
1.

Based on the information above ("Background Information"), can you guess what some of these difficulties are?

Question 2
2.

What do you think might be some ways to be better at spelling in Spanish?

What the research shows:

Recent research in applied linguistics has indicated that the best way to improve your spelling is repetition: to read and write the word over and over again. As you might imagine, however, this is simpler said than done.

Purpose of this activity:

This activity is meant to provide you with the opportunity to repeatedly notice, read, and write the standard way of spelling certain Spanish words. This is one of the best ways to gradually become a better Spanish-language writer!

Description of The Semester-Long Assignment

Every few weeks you will be provided with a list of words.

What do you need to do?

Throughout the semester:

Make sure that you understand the meaning of each word.

Every time you read for this class:
  1. Look for the Palabras Claves while you are reading.
  2. Highlight/underline them in their palabras claves color. This means that when you’re reading you are not only trying to understand the text, but you should also pay attention to how our palabras claves are written and used in a sentence.
  3. Come to class ready to go over passages featuring palabras claves.
Below you will see 16 words that are commonly misppelled in Spanish. You will have to look up the definition of each word, and write one full sentence using that word.

Make sure to spell it correctly to get the full points!
