John "Johnny" Barton Gruelle created the first Raggedy Ann doll in 1914 in Indiana. He made this doll as a gift for his daughter Marcella. Raggedy Ann became popular with little girls all over the U.S. Raggedy Ann and Marcell even became characters in the children's book "The Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy."
