Unit 8.6 Lesson 05 Check Your Progress:

Tectonic Processes and Earthquake Hazards

You have one class period to complete this assessment. NO GOOGLING - you may use your notes from this lesson and your own amazing brain to answer questions and write responses IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Instructions: The International Olympic Committee is meeting to select the city that will host the Olympic Games in 2032. The Committee has identified three cities in the Mediterranean region that could host the Games. Before they can make a choice, they need to evaluate the earthquake hazards of these cities. You have been assigned to the committee as their expert in earthquake hazards. They are asking you to interpret the data contained in a tectonic plate map of the region and to answer some questions to help them in their earthquake hazard forecast.

The below map of the Mediterranean region shows tectonic plate boundaries and the three cities that applied to host the Olympics.
1

View the tectonic plate diagram above, which represents location A on the map. What happens to Earth's tectonic plates at a convergent boundary?

1

View the tectonic plate diagram above, which represents location B on the map. What happens to Earth's tectonic plates at a transform boundary?

1

View the tectonic plate diagram above, which represents location C on the map. What happens to Earth's tectonic plates at a divergent boundary?

1

Refer back to the Olympic cities map. In what area(s) on this map would you expect to see the most earthquake activity? Why?

1

Examine the locations of each of the cities (1, 2, and 3) on the map. Use your knowledge of earthquake patterns and tectonic processes to forecast the city or cities where an earthquake is unlikely to harm people and damage property.

2

Explain why you chose your answer for #5 above. Why is this city (or cities) unlikely to have an earthquake harm people or damage property?

1

Now, forecast the city or cities where an earthquake is likely to harm people and damage property.

2

Explain why you chose your answer for #7 above. Why is this city (or cities) likely to have an earthquake harm people or damage property?

3

In your own words, explain the natural processes inside the Earth that cause the shaking that occurs during an earthquake. Include the words energy, friction, and tectonic plates in your explanation.

1

What additional evidence would you need in order to forecast which city is most likely to experience the greatest threat from earthquakes? Check all that apply.
