TR 1.5: Investigating Proteins and Traits

Objective: KWBAT analyze and interpret evidence to apply what they know about protein molecules.
Part 1

Part 1: Do Now

Dr. Sattari and the genetic researchers at Bay Medical Company have determined the proteins of each spider offspring. Review the results and then answer the question below.
0

The genetic researchers at Bay Medical Company are interested in spiders with the trait for medium silk flexibility. They think this silk can be used for medical purposes such as for making stitches and for creating artificial tendons.

PREDICTION:
Why do you think offspring B has a medium silk flexibility trait?

0

Why do you think offspring D has a high silk flexibility trait?

Part 2

Part 2: Revisiting Claims about Darwin's Bark Spiders

0

Why do the spider offspring have different traits compared to their parents?

0

Which claim do you think answers the investigation question so far?

0

Do we have enough evidence to support or eliminate any of the claims?

Support your answer with evidence from previous lessons.

Sentence starter:
We have enough evidence to (support/eliminate) claim ____.
I know this because...

Part 3: Testing Proteins to Trait Predictions

Link to sim - https://learning.amplify.com/traitsandreproduction/

In previous lessons, you used the Sim to compare spiders with different traits for the same feature. We observed that spiders with different traits had different proteins in their cells.

We also noticed that some organisms can have different proteins in their cells for a particular feature (like those with medium silk flexibility).
Today, we’ll use our Sim to better understand what determines traits at the molecular level. To do this, you’ll be adding different proteins to a spider’s cell to observe how they affect that spider’s trait.
  1. Launch the Simulation.
  2. Then, complete the following table by completing the tests.
  3. Reset the Sim before doing the next tests.
For the testing part, you need to add the protein then record the results.

Greg - adding Protein 2

Ruby and Otis - adding Protein 1

3

Directions:

Step 1: Make an observation, record the observation.
Step 2: Make a prediction, record the prediction.
Step 3: Test your prediction, record the test.

Test 1: Greg's Silk Flexibility

(You are adding Protein 2)

3

Directions:
Step 1: Make an observation, record the observation.
Step 2: Make a prediction, record the prediction.
Step 3: Test your prediction, record the test.

Test 2: Ruby's Body Color

(You are adding Protein 1)

3

Directions:
Step 1: Make an observation, record the observation.
Step 2: Make a prediction, record the prediction.
Step 3: Test your prediction, record the test.

Test 3: Otis' Stripe Color

(You are adding Protein 1)

1

Think about the effect on changing proteins for the features you observed.

Do proteins determine traits?

Provide evidence from these tests to support your answer.

Sentence stem:
Proteins (do/do not) determine traits because...

In the sim, I observed that...

Part 4: Exit Ticket

Why did traits sometimes change after protein molecules were added?

Hint: Think about connectors.

Sentence stem:
Traits sometimes changed after protein was added because....

1

Would you expect these spiders to have the same trait? Why or why not?

1

Would you expect these spiders to have the same trait? Why or why not?
