Part 1

Part 1: Do Now

Feature: a characteristic that all members of a species have.

Trait: a specific characteristic of an individual organism.
0

Explain whether skin color is a feature or a trait.

Sentence stem:
Skin color is a _____.
I know this because....

0

Explain whether blue eyes are a feature or a trait.

Sentence stem:
Blue eyes is a _____.
I know this because....

6

Match the protein combinations to the trait.

Hint:
Protein 1 = 4 connectors
Protein 2 = 2 Connectors
Protein 3 = No Connectors

There are:
2 Low Silk; 2 High Silk

Free point:
Protein 2 and Protein 3 combination makes HIGH SILK FLEXIBILITY.

  • LOW SILK

  • MEDIUM SILK

  • HIGH SILK

  • NO SILK

Part 2

Part 2: Set of Features and Traits

0

This a practice to show me your understanding of features and traits.

Identify 2-3 features and 2-3 of their traits.

Hint: Look at your do now for an example!

Part 3

Part 3: Predictions of Traits

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Launch the Traits and Reproduction Simulation
  2. Select a feature from the Feature menu bar. Each row asks you to look at a different feature.
  3. Examine GREG's & ZORA's traits for the particular feature you are predicting about.
  4. Record your predictions
0

You will need to click on the different features to see Greg and Zora's specific traits.

Remember, you do not need to see their offspring for this part. You are making a prediction!

Part 4

Part 4: Testing Predictions

Link to Sim:

  1. Launch the Traits and Reproduction Simulation
  2. Click on Greg and drag and drop on Zora
  3. The screen will change. Click the arrow below that says “Create Reproductive Cells.”
  4. On the next screen, click the arrow below that says "Randomly Fertilize.” DO NOT PRESS MUTATE.
  5. Select a feature (such as silk flexibility or size) from the Feature menu bar to record the feature for offsprings A-D.
  6. Record data below.
1

Record your data from the simulation below.

0

Were your predictions correct about the offspring?

Did all of the offspring have the same traits?

Explain.

Part 5

Part 5: Protein Connection Analysis

1

Would you expect these spiders to have the same trait? Why or why not?

1

Would you expect these spiders to have the same trait? Why or why not?

Part 6

Part 6: Scavenger Hunt

I know you like scavenger hunts. Complete this using the sim!
6

Categorize the following spiders with their correct trait.

Hint: Use the sim! Each Spider has 3.

  • Low Silk Flexibility
  • Medium Silk Flexibility
  • High Silk Flexibility
  • Sticky Silk
  • Not Sticky Silk
  • Yellow Body Color
  • Brown Body Color
  • Colorless Body Color
  • Greg

  • Zora

  • Leo

  • Anne

  • Otis

  • Ruby

1

These spiders have venom that kill.

1

These spiders are medium body size.

1

This spider has no Bristles.

1

This spider has a purple stripe.

1

These are the steps to create offspring in the sim.

  1. Drag a male spider to a female spider or a female spider to male spider.
  2. Click on "Create Reproductive cells."
  3. Click on "Randomly Fertilize."

Part 6: OPTIONAL CHALLENGE

0

Want extra credit?

1. Create offspring that have the same trait for one feature.

OR

2. Create at least one offspring that has:

SHINY PURPLE STRIPE Color
or
YELLOW-GREEN BODY COLOR.

Screenshot it and add it to this question.
