Formulas:

Airplane specifications generally include pieces of information about the range, cruise speed, and fuel capacity of a given airplane. These three items make it possible to calculate fuel consumption, range, and cruise speed.
Equations:

  • To find nautical miles use the following equation:

DIVIDE
  • To find the time it takes to travel a given distance at a given speed, use the following equation:

  • To find the airplane's fuel consumption: For any problem after 14 do not subtract the 10% fuel capacity. Use the total amount of fuel divided by total time.

Note:

Total fuel is considered the total amount of fuel excluding any fuel reserves. Reserves can generally be considered 10% of the total amount of fuel capacity for the airplane. Total time is the number that you calculated in using distance and speed.
NM = nautical miles = 1.15 miles = 1.85 kilometers
KTS = knots 1 knot = 1.15 miles/hour
FPM = feet per minute

Calculating minutes:

To calculate actual time you will need to take the answer you get from the formula and multiply it by 60. This will give you the total minutes. You will then subtract the hour minutes from the total minutes to calculate the minutes remaining.

As they create new airplane designs, aerospace engineers document their work.
Why is such documentation important? Select all that apply.

1
Draggable itemCorresponding Item
Moderate lift and low drag with high speed.
High lift and high drag with low speed
Low lift and high drag with low speed and good stability
4

Match the force with the arrow.

Draggable itemCorresponding Item
C
force that acts at a right angle to the direction of motion through the air. This force is created by differences in air pressure.
D
The force that propels a flying machine in the direction of motion. The engines produce this force.
A
The force of gravity. It acts in a downward direction—toward the center of the Earth.
B
The force that acts opposite to the direction of motion. This force is caused by friction and differences in air pressure.
1

Describe what happens to an airplane in flight when drag is greater than thrust.

1

Which of Newton’s Laws of Motion explains what is happening in this statement—An airplane accelerates because of the force of thrust.

1

When flying at a constant altitude the thrust and drag are equal and the aircraft holds a constant airspeed

1

The heavier the aircraft the more thrust needed to fly it.

1

Which of Newton’s Laws of Motion explains what is happening in this statement—An airplane was at rest on the runway, waiting in line for the planes ahead of it to take off. The pilot turns on the jet engines and the plane begins moving forward on the runway. The plane changed from a state of rest to being in motion as a result of the force of thrust.

1

A military cargo plane is loaded with the maximum weight allowable for the flight. The cargo is heavier than what the pilot usually carries, so the pilot adjusts as follows:

2

Name the motion illustrated by the aircraft image.

Name the motion illustrated by the aircraft image.

1

Which action creates a difference in the lift on each wing, causing the plane to roll?

1

When is a pilot likely to lower the elevators on an airplane?

1

You have to design an airplane that is very fast. What type of airfoil would you use for the wing?

1

You are designing an airplane to carry liquid cargo that will slosh and move side to side in its container. This could make the plane unstable. What type of airfoil would you use for the wing?

1

Examine the data in the chart. The flight distance from Reno, Nevada to Bozeman, Montana is 534 NM.
Which planes have sufficient range to fly between the two cities without refueling?

1

The F-22 Raptor flies at 1301 kts.
How long would it take to fly from San Diego to Seattle, a distance of 1091 NM?

Use this formula
Remember to calculate the minutes. (multiply by 60 then subtract the hour minutes.)

1

A dispatcher is planning visual indicators and checkpoints for a 200-nautical-mile flight from El Paso, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. A Google satellite terrain map will be used to select the checkpoints.
Use the Google satellite terrain map below to determine the best visual checkpoint that would be most useful for the pilot to make sure he is on course:
