Throughout Unit 1, you have learned about three unique groups of people (African Americans, Native Americans, and women) and the ways in which early European colonization of the New World impacted every aspect of their lives. Now, we are going to engage in a full class "Fishbowl Discussion" to summarize all that we have read and learned about. Note: this assessment is a discussion, and not a debate. We want to hear from all of you, because we know you all have valuable ideas! Here's how it works:
We will divide our class into two circles --- a smaller, inner circle and a larger, outer circle. The inner circle will be provided with an opportunity to talk while the outer circle listens. This will happen three times (round 1, round 2, round 3.)
You will be assigned to a group of three, and you will take turns being in the inner circle and outer circle.

For example, in round 1, if student A, B, and C are in a group together, while student A is in the inner circle participating, student B and C are in the outer circle observing.

Then, in the 2nd round, student B will be in the inner circle participating, while student A and C are in the outer circle observing.

In the 3rd round, student C will be in the inner circle participating, while student A and B are in the outer circle observing.

What questions do you have about the Fishbowl Discussion?

Alright, alright, so what are we discussing?

At the beginning of the school year, we discussed the importance of keeping themes at the center of our learning. These six themes help us contextualize what we are learning about, and allow us to see how trends evolve over time throughout history. For this performance assessment, we are going to hone in on the theme of "Culture and Progress" by answering the question below:

How have African Americans, Native Americans, and women been excluded from American society and culture since before the founding of the United States?
