Coyote and Bear Plant a Garden

"Good morning, Bear," Coyote said. "See that nice field over there? Why don't we plant a garden?"

"That is a good idea," said Bear. "I will bring the seeds."

Coyote wanted to make sure the best part of the crop went to him, not Bear. He decided he would play a trick.

"We should decide how the crop will be divided," said Coyote. "How about I take all that grows above the ground, and you take all that grows below?"

Bear thought for a little while. "That sounds fair to me," he replied.

After many weeks, Bear said it was time to harvest.

"These leaves will keep my family full for months," Coyote thought as he picked the green tops and put them in his sack. Bear followed behind, digging in the ground and pulling up dirty orange things.

Later, Coyote met Bear. "What kind of seeds did we plant, Bear?" he asked. "My family didn't like the leaves I brought home."

"They are called carrots," replied Bear. "My family loved them!"

"I don't think the crop was divided fairly," complained Coyote. "Let's plant another crop, but this time I get the part that grows in the ground."

"Agreed," said Bear. "I'll bring the seeds."

One day, Bear looked at the green plants and said, "It is time to harvest."

As they harvested, Bear said, "I have taken all I need from the top. As we agreed, you can have everything growing in the ground."

As Bear walked away, Coyote dug into the ground excitedly. But he found only roots as thin as threads. He bit into one and spit it out.

"Wait, Bear! What kind of seeds did we plant this time?"

"They are called corn!" Bear yelled over his shoulder.

Carrying his empty sack, Coyote went home to his hungry family.

Red Riding Hood

Once there was a little girl who loved her grandmother very much. She had a name, but everyone called her Red Riding Hood because of the red cloak that she wore. One day she was walking through the woods to visit her grandmother, and she stopped to pick some flowers. When a wolf saw her, he put on his most pleasant face, and he walked toward the girl. “Hello,” he said. “What do you have in that basket?” Red Riding Hood knew she should not talk to strangers, but the wolf seemed nice. “I am taking soup to my grandmother because she doesn’t feel well,” Red Riding Hood said. “I hope your grandmother feels better soon,” the wolf said. The wolf wanted the food for himself, so he raced ahead of the little girl to arrive at her grandmother’s house first. He sneaked into the house, put on the grandmother’s cap, and he took her place in bed. Soon he saw Red Riding Hood peek around the corner, and he saw that she looked confused. “Grandma, what big eyes you have!” “The better to see you with, my dear.” “And what big ears you have!” “The better to hear you with," the wolf said, and he smiled at his own cleverness. “And what big teeth you have!” At these words, the wolf knew she had caught him, so he leapt up and tried to grab her basket of food. Red Riding Hood was a brave girl, however, and she chased him out of the house and into the woods. Then, she sat down at the table with her grandmother to a delicious lunch.
