Weathering means to rock into sediments. Weathering is the process by which rocks are broken down into sediments over a period of time.

Mechanical Weathering

Mechanical weathering changes the size and of rock, not the chemical arrangement.

Chemical Weathering

The breaking down of rocks through chemical processes that change the rock’s of atoms (chemicals). Some common types of atoms/chemicals are Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Carbon, etc.

Acid rain is an example of chemical weathering. Acid rain occurs when carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with water in clouds to produce carbonic acid. As it rains down, carbonic acid (breaks down) rocks. Chemical reactions with metals also cause chemical weathering. Oxygen can react with in rocks and cause them to rust and break down.

Erosion

Erosion is when sediments (broken pieces of rocks) are from one location to another.

Categorize the different types of mechanical weathering!!!

  • Glacial Weathering

  • River (Surface runoff) Weathering

  • Wind Weathering

  • Freezing and Expanding rock Weathering

Mechanical (MW) or Chemical (CW) weathering?

  • An abrasion on a rock is a scrape that occurs when wind or water hits against rock.

  • Plants growing in the cracks of rocks causes the rocks to split.

  • Iron reacts with oxygen to make blue soil.

  • Temperature changes like when water freezes into cracks and expands.

  • Caves forming when carbonic acid dissolves limestone.

  • Chemical Weathering

  • Mechanical Weathering

Categorize the following into erosion or weathering

  • Water seeps into a rock freezes and then expands over night breaking the rock in half.

  • Wind blows sand against a larger rock causing the rock to break down.

  • When rocks are broken down into smaller rocks.

  • Wind blows small particles of rock to a different area.

  • A river moves sediments down to another place.

  • When rocks are transported from one place to another place.

  • Erosion

  • Weathering

A) Rocks can be broken down in a variety of ways through the process of weathering. Which of the following is an example of a chemical form of weathering?. Things like moving water, wind, and tectonic plates help shape the natural features of the Earth's surface also known as the Earth's are broken down into smaller pieces. It can be caused by water, air, chemicals, plants, and animals.

Examples of mechanical weathering include

Weathering is the the rocks away. " Weathering makes a mess and erosion cleans it up."

The coast line of Massachusetts (USA), we can see cape cod in 1984 vs. 2014 and we can see that / Natural forces like major storms and rising sea levels erode these smaller peices even further.

A) Miami Beach is a popular tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches and white sand. However, over time, the sandy part of the beach seems to be shrinking and the water creeps further and further towards the boardwalk. Every few years, the city needs to bring in sand to replenish the shrinking beach. Which of the following explains why the city of Miami Beach needs to bring in sand every few years?

Your teacher has decided that you are the EVALUATOR. You are given the the task of evaluating which student is more correct based on your understanding of the difference between weathering and erosion. Only one student is correct, which student is it?

Sort the cards into weathering, erosion and deposition categories.

  • Muddy deltas forming at the mouths of rivers as soil is dropped off there by river water

  • A hurricane washing sand off of a beach.

  • Water freezing in the cracks in rock and splitting them open.

  • Tree roots growing around rocks and breaking them.

  • Rain washing soil away from the P.E. field carrying it away to somewhere else

  • A river polishing rocks smooth without removing them.

  • Strong winds blowing sand across a beach.

  • Layers of sediment dropped at the bottom of a lake a long time ago.

  • A mudslide flowing and moving mud down a hill.

  • Wind blowing sand against a rock causing the rock to have abrasions and to break down

  • Weathering "breaking"

  • Erosion "carrying"

  • Deposition "dropping off"
