A similar "rule" that teachers often use to help develop resourcefulness and self-reliance in students is called 3 Before Me. Rather than being time-based, 3 Before Me suggests that a student who is stuck should utilize three other helpful resources before asking the teacher to assist.

Some of my students have utilized their free time to follow their passions and interests. They have built websites, designed and printed in 3D, learned other languages, studied coding, and played challenging academic games like chess. These types of activities are often enriching and rewarding!
