An ancient Greek myth tells of the Minotaur, a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man that lived on the island of Crete. The horrible beast killed and ate people, and so Minos, the King of Crete had to find a way to keep this monster from blighting life on his island. In order to do so, he asked for the advice of an oracle. Then, following the instructions he received, Minos had a giant maze built. The structure was so vast and so confusing that, once inside, no one could ever escape from it. One day, however, a brave young man named Theseus was able not only to enter it and kill the Minotaur but also to find his way out. How was he able to make his way through the maze without becoming completely befuddled? He had help from Ariadne, King Minos’s daughter. The young woman, who loved Theseus, gave him a ball of thread, which he unwound to mark his path.
