Elkhorn Slough is a tidal salt marsh just north of Monterey, California. Many species live in the slough including a population of the endangered Southern Sea Otter. There are about 2800 Southern Sea Otters left in the wild. About 5% of the total population live in the slough. Each year, about 15 otter pups are born, and about 2 die in Elkhorn Slough. Otters move in and out of the slough to hunt, give birth or sleep. Over the course of a year, about 50 otters move into the slough and about 60 leave.
