Use your notes to determine which way the plates are moving and what landforms are being created at the specified locations. Some terminology that you need to know:
  • Convergent: The plates are moving towards each other.
  • Divergent: The plates are moving away from each other.
  • Transform: The plates are moving sideways past each other - like cars on opposite sides of a road.
  • Fault: The crack that forms where two plates meet. Forms at all plate boundaries.
  • Rift: The gap that is formed when plates diverge.
  • Ridge: The "hill" that is formed when two plates are diverging.
  • Trench: A large valley that forms when oceanic crust gets subducted
