*We use direct object pronouns to avoid repeating nouns that have already been mentioned, usually to answer a question when it’s clear what you’re referring to:

Quiero la falda. --> La quiero.

I want the skirt. --> I want it.

In this example “the skirt” is replaced by “la”

  • Direct Object Pronouns must agree in number and gender with the noun they replace. You know which direct object pronoun to use based on the definite article that comes before it in a sentence. Essentially, the direct object pronoun replaces both the definite article and the thing.

  • Note that el changes to lo, while la, los and las stay the same

Masc. Feminine

singular lo (it, him) la (it, her)

plural los (them) las (them)

definite article --> Direct object pronoun

el → lo

los → los

la → la

las → las

When talking about people use the following direct object pronouns to refer to them:

yo me

tú te

nosotros nos

vosotros os

Direct Object Pronouns go:

  1. Before a conjugated verb

or 2. after and attached to the infinitive

It you are using both a conjugated verb and an infinitive in a sentence/question, you can place the direct object pronoun either before the conjugated verb OR after & attached to the infinitve.

Example: ¿Quieres comprar los zapatos?

Sí, los quiero comprar. OR Sí, quiero comprarlos.

For these there are 2 ways you can rephrase a sentence using a DOP, depending on where you put it. It can go: after & attached to the infinitive OR before the conjugated verb. Each sentence below is done both ways.
