INTRODUCTION The Hebrews differed from their neighbors in many ways. Most groups in the ancient world were polytheistic, but the Hebrews were not. Their religious beliefs and practices set them apart from the people around them and from the people who conquered them. While many other groups borrowed cultural practices from one another, the Hebrews purposely kept their practices separate and different. Jerusalem was their capital and the temple was the focus of religious life.
OBJECTIVE: Explain why the rulers who conquered the Jews also robbed and destroyed their great temples.
