Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst storms ever. Katrina hit the city of New Orleans in 2005. The paths of hurricanes are difficult to predict more than a few days ahead. People were warned to leave the city to prevent being harmed by the storm. Many people left New Orleans for cities far away. Other people could not leave because they didn’t have money to travel. Some people who could leave, did not. They wanted to protect their homes or take care of older family members who were very sick. Some people didn’t get the warning because the beginning of the storm had already caused electric power to go out. They did not hear it because their televisions and radios did not work. Katrina flooded the city and many people drowned. Rescue teams could not __________ to all the calls for help. Homes and buildings were ruined. Many years later, the work to __________ from Katrina was still unfinished. Some people did rebuild their homes. But homes in poorer neighborhoods have not been repaired. People were not able to return to their homes. The effects of the storm were awful, but some people remember that people were kind and they helped each other even during the worst times. Since that time, people in New Orleans have worked to better __________ to deal with future hurricanes. Weather experts are working on better __________ of hurricanes. City planners are working on __________ of future floods like the ones caused by Katrina.
