The Earth System

We just explained why East Ferris is getting less rain than West Ferris. Today, we’ll read a book that can help them think about the situation on Ferris Island in a different way - by thinking about what caused the dinosaurs to go extinct many millions of years ago!

Review

A system is a group of parts that work together.
Earth is a system because it has different parts that interact and work together - the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere.
  • Hydrosphere - all of the liquid water and ice Earth
  • Biosphere - all the living things on Earth
  • Atmosphere - the air that surrounds Earth
  • Geosphere - the solid part of Earth
For each example, choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.
1

Mountains and landforms - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Glaciers - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Gases surrounding the Earth - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Humans - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Lakes, rivers, streams - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Volcanos erupt, causing lava to cool and become rock. - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

Wind - Choose if this is part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere or geosphere.

1

This picture shows tiny animals that live in the water. They’re so small you can hardly see them. Are they part of the hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, or geosphere?

Labeling Earth System Interactions

Now we will add to a diagram of Ferris Island to show how the parts of the Earth system (atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere) interact to create the rain shadow effect.
2

Number 1 on the diagram: Water evaporates from the ocean and turns from liquid water to water vapor
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)

3

Number 2 on the diagram: Wind blows water vapor into the mountain and up the side of the mountain.
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)

2

Number 3 on the diagram: Water vapor goes up high in the atmosphere and condenses to liquid water and rains down.
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)

2

Number 4 on the diagram: Rainwater seeps into the ground, storing in an underground reservoir in the cracks of the ground.
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)

3

Number 5 on the diagram: People in West Ferris use a surface reservoir to collect extra rainwater. They also use groundwater.
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)

3

Number 6 on the diagram: The people of East Ferris only have groundwater to use, so they create a water shortage.
Choose which parts of the Earth system interact (work together) to create the rain shadow effect.
Choose all that apply (there maybe more than one correct answer)
