In this image of Earth and the Moon from the Sim, what does the circle around Earth represent?

Exit Ticket Review:
Why does the moon appear mostly illuminated (Gibbous) from earth?

Guided Notes:

Vocabulary:
4. Moon phase: the shape of the illuminated part of the Moon as it appears from Earth
5. Orbit: the nearly circular path a smaller object (like the Moon) travels around a larger object (like Earth)
6. Pattern: something we observe to be similar over and over again

Why does a Full moon occur when the moon is behind the Earth, in a top view, rather than a shadow making it dark?

Observe the Phases of the Moon
  1. Face the lamp, holding the Moon sphere at arm’s length a little above your head.
  2. Observe a new moon phase.
  3. Turn your body slightly to the left, away from the lamp (sun).
  4. Observe crescent moon phase.
  5. Continue turning to observe quarter, gibbous, and full moon phases.
  6. Continue turning until you observe a new moon phase again
Work in pairs to observe Top View and View from Earth
  1. Top View observer: Watch from above while your partner moves the Moon sphere in its orbit.
  2. View from Earth observer: Stop periodically, tell the Top View observer what phase you see “from Earth,” and have the Top View observer share what the Moon sphere looks like from above.
Switch roles and repeat.

Prompt: How can we predict how the Moon will change appearance from day to day?

Use 2 key phrases:
- I believe that - According to - Associated with - Refers to
- Consists of - Which in turn - Therefore - Subsequently
- Are similar/dissimilar - Leads/led to - Compared to

CFS:
  • Accurately identifies the light on the moon based on its position
  • Accurately describes the cause and effect relationship between rotational movements and illuminated objects
