- When converting from a unit with a prefix to a basic unit, MULTIPLY by the decimal equivalent.

Hint: Think of “crossing out” the prefix when you are going from a unit with a prefix to a basic unit. The “X” used to cross it out looks like a multiplication symbol, so you need to multiply.
