Communication and Collaboration in the Classroom

Collaboration is the process of a joint process in which students engage in order to expand their knowledge or create knowledge as a result of their collaboration (Evans, 2020).
Skills:
  1. Empathy: hrough empathy, students will be able to detect an individual's emotions and understand their perspective. This is essential for students to be successful in communicating with other students from different backgrounds and experiences.
  2. Reflection: A key skill in successful communication is reflection, which includes reflecting upon one’s own progress and the progress of the group (Evans, 2020). Through reflections, a student is able to adjust their own individual process in order to benefit the group.
  3. Active Listening: Through this skill, students will be able to seek clarity about others’ thinking and respect the opinions of others (Evans, 2020). This allows for effective communication to take place among different people as everyone’s voice is being heard and respected.

To further explain, teachers are able to meet and connect with other educators through Gridpals (Powers, 2021). With Gridpals, teachers can set up a shared classroom for their students to connect. This will cause students to be able to communicate with other students from different backgrounds and learn from each other.​​

  2. Engages middle school students as it has a similar setup to TikTok. This allows students to be creative in their videos.
  3. The ability to do customizable video responses pushes students to think critically about how they will respond so that it is clear to the viewer (Powers, 2021).
  4. It is a flexible venue for teachers and students to communicate. To further explain, it gives students options about how they want to demonstrate their learning, which leads to higher engagement (Powers, 2021)..
  5. Cons
  6. It is set up like social-media, so it can distract students from the purpose of their assignments (Powers, 2021).
  7. There is no filter that automatically filters out inappropriate videos the students may post. It is up to the teacher to stay vigilant.
  8. Being required to make a video may seem more like a chore for some students, which can cause them to lose interest.

Diigo is a social bookmarking tool students can use to gather their research and annotation in one place.Even more so, Diigo can be used to promote global awareness as it is a digital tool that allows students to enrich their learning by collaborating with others (Oliver, et al., 2019). To further explain, teachers can assign their students a group project to research a particular country based on the geography, culture, economics, etcs.
1. Pros:
  1. There are customizations options as well as social features that allow students to share and gather online information (Bereton, 2013).
  2. It encourages online conversations among students based on the materials gathered.
  3. It encourages teamwork among groups as it allows students to share their resources.
2. Cons:
  1. Users need to stay within one browser tab to use Diigo
  2. Advanced searches can turn up questionable content as there isn’t much guidance on selecting sources provided by Diigo.
  3. User-created content is not filtered for personal information before it is publicly shared.

Padlet is a digital tool that allows students to gather information onto a virtual board. Students can upload their documents they’ve created and even resources they think will be helpful.Through padlet, teachers are able to scaffold cross-cultural interactions by being able to establish relationships among each other and learn about what others are learning (Matthews, 2016).

  2. It provides a customizable interface (Rogowski, 2021)..
  3. Allows for students to easily post materials.
  4. Students are able to comment on each other’s posts.
  5. Cons:
  6. There is no filter for what can be posted on Padlet.
  7. Accessibility features for differentiation are lacking (Rogowski, 2021).
  8. It does not provide nuanced opportunities for students, so most teachers use it as an opener to a lesson.

1. Jig-saw is a research-based cooperative learning technique developed by Elliot Aronson in the early 1970s. This activity has students divided into groups and are given a topic in which the students need to become experts in. In fact, it was found that this approach can lead to active participation in the learning process, which improves upon their academic performance (Sanaie, et al., 2019).

2. Socratic Seminar helps students to understand ideas, issues, and values reflected in a text through a group discussion. It was actually found that socratic siemens helped students to think critically, develop empathy and new perspectives, and engage in student-led feedback (Hare, 2019). This activity is influenced by cooperative learning, which is a research practice that requires students to work together in order to achieve a goal.

3. Four corners is an activity in which students are to make a decision about a problem or question. t was found that four corners stimulated students to say their opinions and reasoning based on a question (Kurnia, 2018). This opened up discussions among the students as they had differing opinions.
