You may use a calculator to multiply on this problem.

50-50?--Recent research has shown that the probability of giving birth to a boy is around 53% versus 47% for girls.

a) If a family is planning on having two children, what is the probability of having one boy and one girl (in any order)? Type this in the answer box.

b) What is the probability of having two girls?

"Answer for a): The probability that a family has one boy and one girl..."

Dinner Out--On any given day, the probability that Mr. Kovalik orders a steak dinner (S) is \frac{5}{8} and the probability that he orders fish (F) is \frac{3}{8}. He goes out for dinner twice in a row.

a) What is the probability that Mr. Kovalik orders fish at least one of the two days? Type this in the answer box.

b) What is the probability that Mr. Kovalik orders steak two days in a row?

"Answer for a): The probability that Mr. Kovalik orders fish at least one of the two days..."

Lottery—In New York, the chance of winning a prize on any given scratch card is \frac{1}{10}. Joe stops at a convenience store every Monday and Tuesday to buy scratch cards for a chance at winning.

a) What is the probability that Joe wins at least once during the two day period?

b) What is the probability that Joe wins both days in a row?

"Answer for a): The probability that Joe wins at least once is..."

Quite Dicey--If you roll two six-sided dice, what is the probability that at least one die shows a 3? Diagram optional :)

Plants Galore--Mr. V loves plants. At the gardening store, there are 4 different kinds of plants (tulip, fern, cactus, ficus) and 4 different kinds of pots to hold the plants (clay, plastic, metal, wood).

If Mr. V randomly picks the plant and the pot, what is the probability that he won't get a clay plot OR a cactus?

Nice work!

Weather Delay--It rains a lot in London. In the summer, each day there is a \frac{3}{10} chance for rain and a \frac{7}{10} chance for no rain. A math student is interested in probabilities for rain on Saturday and Sunday.

a) What is the probability that there is no rain at all on both Saturday and Sunday?

b) What is the probability that there is at least one day of rain?

"Answer for a): The probability that there is no rain at all ..."
