Key Terms

-Scientific Hypothesis: A specific and testable prediction about the results of an experiment.

-Variable: An element, feature, or factor that can vary or change (i.e. boat width, foot length, etc.)

-Dependent Variable: A variable whose ability to change depends on another variable and is measured.

-Independent Variable: A value not dependent on another value but directly changed by an experimenter.

-Control Variable: A variable that is kept the same throughout an experiment to avoid affecting the results.

*Scientific experiments can have many control variables but only one variable can be directly changed (independent)

and for simplicity we will allow only one measured variable (dependent). All other variables should be controlled.

Required

Select all the things that can changed in this experiment below. Remember to select ALL that apply.

Experiment: Students drop a ball from different heights and record the falling time.

Required

Identify the independent variable given the experiment below.

Required

Identify the dependent variable given the experiment below.

Required

Identify a control variable given the experiment below.

Required

Select all the things that can be changed in this experiment below. Remember to select ALL that apply.

Experiment: A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car.

Required

Identify the independent variable given the experiment below.

Experiment: A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car.

Required

Identify the dependent variable given the experiment below.

Required

Identify a control variable given the experiment below.

Experiment: A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car.

Required

Identify a scientific hypothesis that can be tested by the experiment below.

Experiment: Students drop a ball from different heights and record the falling time.

Required

Identify a scientific hypothesis that can be tested by the experiment below.

Experiment: A study was done to find if different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car.

EXTRA PRACTICE (Not Required)

Identify the dependent, independent, and control variable(s) in that order given the experiment below.

Experiment: A toy car is turned on travelling a distance and then turned off some time later.

1)Dependent variable

2) independent variable

3) control variable(s):
