Leader of the Pack

1. Bailey tried to pretend she wasn’t anxious. She tossed her head back and looked around the schoolyard. But her skin felt like it had snakes squirming in it. She made sure she didn’t make eye contact with anyone. Kids had to come to her. She wouldn’t go to them. It was the same plan she always stuck to.

2. It was hard being the new kid at school. She had lived in sixteen different states since she was born. She moved from state to state because of her dad’s job. It was lonely being the new kid. She felt invisible sometimes when no one talked to her.

3. Recess was always the worst part. She had no idea who to talk to. Bailey spotted a group of girls walking her way. She took a deep breath. She knew if she didn’t get it right the first time it would never be good. She knew if she didn’t get it right the first time it would never be good. “Hi,” she said brightly when the squad stopped in front of her.

4. “Hi,” said a gum-chewing, black haired girl. Bailey knew she was the pack leader.

5. “I’m Bailey. I’ve got two dogs, a goldfish, and a really huge collection of socks.”

6. The leader raised an eyebrow while the other girls giggled. “Socks?”

7. Bailey held her smile. This was a big moment. She had to stay strong. “Yes, socks. Neon ones, dog ones, rainbow onces...you name it and I’ve got it.”

8. The girls just stared at her for a moment. Then the leader smiled. “My name is Julia.”
