Math - [Lesson 2.6]

Teacher: Mr. Kovalik (408) 314-1092

Objective and Summary:
SWBAT apply the distance formula to solve real-work problems
**For independent practice today, please make sure you type ALL WORK you do with your distance formula with the absolute values. Some questions say the number lines are optional**
1

Thermometer--One Winter afternoon in Wisconsin, the temperature is 7°C. In the evening it was -9°C.

What was the total change in the temperature? Use the formula |p-q| and check your work with either number line.

(Note: to type || for absolute value, use Shift and \ which is usually under the backspace button)

"The total change in temperature was..."

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|
#2: Accurately calculates distance and uses number line to check work

1

Distance--What is the distance between -4 and 9?

a) Use the formula |p-q|
b) Check your answer by demonstrating on the number line

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|
#2: Accurately calculates distance and uses number line to check work

MEDIUM Problems. Keep going!

Calculate--What is the distance between -4 and -10?

**Using the number line is optional. You must SYW for the formula**

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|
#2: Accurately calculates distance and uses number line to check work

1

No More Lines--Calculate the distance between -105 and 32.

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|

1

No More Lines--Calculate the distance between -15 and -27.

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|

1

SPICY--Try if you have time.

Elevation--A hiker starts a trail at 40 feet below sea level and reaches the top of a hill which is 170 feet above sea level. (Sea level is 0 feet)

a) What was their change in elevation (height)?

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|

1

SPICY--Try if you have time.

Babel drew a number line and put down two points. One point is at -43 and the other is at 10.

Cabel says that the distance between the two points is -53. Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

"I (agree / disagree) with Cabel because..."

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|

4

Science Experiment--Ms. Paul needs some temperature data for a science experiment. She asks Brayan to measure the temperature in the morning and in the afternoon.

The temperature dropped from 7℉ to -11℉.

Brayan says that the temperature change was 18℉, while Diego says that the temperature changed by 4℉.
Who is correct? Explain using calculations or visuals as evidence.

"(Brayan / Diego) is correct because..."

CFS:
#1: Accurately substitutes values into formula |p-q|
#2: Accurately calculates distance and uses number line to check work

Keep pushing yourself ahead!

1) For more practice with positive or negative integers, do any of the recommended (starred) skills that are adding or subtracting integers.

2) You can also do challenge work like Algebra 1 if Mr. Kovalik has approved that for you.
