Warm Up: On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being no effort and 10 being 100% effort), rank your effort on the Q1 SAT Reading Exam (October 2022).

If you did not take the exam, write "N/A."

Warm Up: What strategies did you use on the SAT Mid-Year exam and how did they go? [Check all that apply]

Reviewing Knowledge Together: We went over this chart in Quarter 1, and discussed why it's important to limit your time reading each passage to 5 minutes so you have enough time to get to each question.

Reflection: How did you split your time between reading the passage and answering the questions on the Mid-Year exam?

If you did not take the exam, answer based on what you normally do.

Remember that you do not need to know every single word in a passage to completely understand each passage! Here's the SAT Reading strategy we worked on last time.

Here's why this strategy matters: English is weird and the same word can have an entirely different meaning based on how it's used in the sentence.

Rapid-Fire Exercise: How quickly can you determine the meaning of each of these homonyms?

Example 1: The bandage was wound around the wound.

Full Discrepancy: As a class, we did not do well on this Reading skill on the Mid-Year Exam. On average, we are answering 35% of Words in Context questions right, which is 24-27% below past 11th graders at this point in the year!

Hopefully the Rapid Fire exercise above gave you a bit more faith in the process. Some of us had trouble with time, and most of these questions were later in the test, but others need to have a bit more faith in the reading strategy.

Understanding Words in Context questions show up on 20% of the SAT Reading exam -- this is about 1 in every 5 questions!

So let's figure out how are you doing!

Review your Mastery Manager report for the Mid-Year Assessment. On the Mid-Year Exam, the Words in Context questions were:

  • #5, 7, 11, 14, 27, 32, 34, 37
