Introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the new MCU character Toussaint has an important name with a hidden meaning and historical significance
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever introduces the new character Toussaint in a significant mid-credit scene, and his name has an even deeper meaning than some viewers may realize...
Having a character who is being raised in Haiti named Toussaint calls back to the nation's history. Toussaint Louverture was a Black Haitian revolutionary who fought against slavery. He was a Haitian general and one of the most prominent leaders in the Haitian Revolution, a successful insurrection that started in 1791 against the French colonial rule by self-liberated slaves, which resulted in Haiti's independence in 1804. Significantly, it is the only slave uprising that led to the founding of a slave-free state, and its abolition of slavery had a remarkable impact throughout the Americas.
Similar to the first Black Panther, Ryan Coogler continues this tradition in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is a movie that strives for authenticity and is keen on reflecting on real history. Expanding on the metaphor established in the first film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever reflects on the threat of colonialism as it evidently reflects on real history in various instances throughout the film, including in its Easter eggs. For example, the building number of Nakia's house in Haiti is 1804, the year Haiti gained independence.
