Read the passages “We Need Rainforests” and “Why Is Climate Changing?” and then answer Numbers 1 through 12.
Passage 1: We Need Rainforests by Sciences 4 Kids
(1) Every forest is important because it is the home of many plants and animals and it gives to us the oxygen we need to survive. However, among the others, rainforests are particularly important. These majestic jungles across the world are so-called because it rains very often there and the climate is warm and humid.
(2) Rainforests exist in Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. The most famous one is the Amazon rainforest, in South America. The Amazon is called the “lungs of the earth” because it’s the largest one on the earth and is extremely important for our planet. It keeps the climate stable, by protecting the earth from floods and droughts because it captures a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2). It also provides shelter for millions of plants and animals. Also, native people from the Amazon live in the forest.
(3) Unfortunately, this wonderful habitat is threatened by many human activities, and we are losing many acres of forest because of deforestation. Over the past years, rainforests across the world have been destroyed to create space for cattle and plantations, collecting wood or extracting minerals.
(4) Climate change is also endangering rainforests. The Amazon, in particular, is disappearing incredibly fast.
(5) It is very important that we manage to safeguard these precious forests as our future might depend on them! Remember to check the source of the products you buy and choose sustainable goods whenever it’s possible.
(6) Remember to check the source of the products you buy and choose sustainable goods whenever it’s possible.
Passage 2: Why is Climate Changing? by Sciences 4 Kids
(7) The Earth’s climate is constantly changing, even if you might not notice it.
(8) When people talk about current climate change, they are mostly saying that the Earth is getting warmer because of heat-trapping gases added to the atmosphere. These gases are produced by burning fossil fuels - for example coal, petroleum and natural gas - or by other human activities and are called greenhouse gases.
(9) As the Earth becomes warmer, the world changes: glaciers are melting, storms and natural disasters occur more frequently.
(10) The Earth’s climate has changed in the past, but now it’s happening faster and differently because of human impact.
(11) Fossil fuels are the main reason why climate is changing. Burning coal, oil, natural gas to power homes and factories release carbon dioxide which is a heat-trapping gas, into the atmosphere.
(12) Heat-trapping gases are also called greenhouse gases. If they didn’t exist, our planet would be incredibly cold! They exist to help keep the Earth warm enough for earthlings to live.
(13) But now, people are releasing too many gases, and the planet is becoming too warm. If this happens, there will be consequences on our environment, on the climate and on animals and their habitat.
