Pre_goal - I can tell the difference among the definitions of the dependent variable, independent variable, and the control variable.

Using the definitions below to answer questions #1-3.

Key Terms

-Scientific Hypothesis: A specific and testable prediction about the results of an experiment.

-Variable: An element, feature, or factor that can vary or change (i.e. ramp height, etc.)

-Dependent Variable: A variable whose value depends on another variable and is measured.

-Independent Variable: A value not dependent on another value but directly changed by an experimenter.

-Control Variable: A variable that is kept the same throughout an experiment.

*There can be many control variables but only one variable can be directly changed (independent)

and for simplicity one measured variable (dependent). All other variables must be controlled.

Required

Which definition describes a control variable.

Required

Which definition describes an independent variable.

Required

Which definition describes a dependent variable.

Goal - I can recognize a scientific hypothesis, Independent, Dependent, and Control variables given an experiment.

Required

Select all the things that can changed in this experiment below. Remember to select ALL that apply.
Experiment: A toy car is allowed to travel different chosen distances across a flat table. The travel times of each distance are recorded.

Required

Identify the independent variable in the experiment below.

Required

Identify the dependent variable in the experiment below.

Required

Identify a control variable in the experiment below.

Experiment: A toy car is allowed to travel different chosen distances across a flat table. The travel times of each distance are recorded.

Required

Identify a scientific hypothesis that can be tested by the situation below.

Experiment: A toy car is allowed to travel different chosen distances across a flat table. The travel times of each distance are recorded.

Extra Credit Question: Explain the difference between a control variable and the independent variable in a science experiment.
