A 20-year-old biological female has a mother and aunt who both had breast cancer, so her family doctor sent her to be tested for the mutations that can cause breast cancer: BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 are both tumor suppressor genes. Like p53, they prevent tumors from forming.
The test reveals that the patient has a mutation in her BRCA1 gene, but not her BRCA 2 gene.
