Objective: KWBAT explain the impact of human activity on water availability.
Warm Up - East Ferris’s Water Shortage
f
Welcome back, water engineers. Yesterday, we learned about ways that humans can impact how much freshwater is available to use by polluting it or using too much. Today, we’re going to use those ideas to explain what could be happening in East Ferris.
Let’s start by analyzing some new information from Mayor McKnight and see what we notice!
West Ferris gets most of its freshwater from rain they collect in a surface reservoir.
East Ferris gets freshwater from the groundwater reservoir.
A reminder how groundwater reservoirs work
An example of a surface reservoir
A reservoir is somewhere that freshwater is stored.
A groundwater reservoir stores water underground and when it rains or when water flows on the surface, some of the water goes through the soil and collects between the spaces of rock underground.
Human Impact on Water
The amount of water available in an area depends on the amount of water flowing in and the amount of water flowing out of that area.

Why could East Ferris be running out of water? Think about the amount of water going into East Ferris and going out of East Ferris.
Claim:
East Ferris could be running out of water because more water is going _____________ (into or out of) East Ferris than water going _____________ (into or out of) East Ferris.
Evidence: Use the rain data table and the population growth cart to support your answer.
Sentence starters:
In the rain data, it shows ____________

Parts of the Earth System
The Earth is a system. A system has multiple parts that interact with one another in different ways.
The biosphere is all the living things on Earth. This includes people.
The hydrosphere is all of the liquid water and ice on Earth.
The biosphere and the hydrosphere interact when living things, including people, use water.
